About the Trainer

Steve Croteau has raised and trained Labrador retrievers since 1989. He has trained search and rescue dogs for more than 12 years. Steve believes in the gentle methods of training using positive reinforcement; he finds it more pleasant and effective than the old school methodology of corrections and enforcement. He has been training dogs professionally since 2003 and he is receiving referrals from veterinarians, breeders, rescue shelters and, most of all, from his past clients. Steve is a member of the Association of Pet Dog Trainers and an American Kennel Club Canine Good Citizenship approved evaluator.

Servicing Rhode Island, western Connecticut and southern Massachusetts.

GENTLE LEADER TRAINING

Gentle leaders are headcollars, not muzzles. The loop over the nose acts as a signal, in the dog's own language, that they are not the boss (similar to how the puppy's mother would correct bad behavior in the litter). The neck strap acts to put pressure on the back of the neck (instead of the front of the neck like traditional collars) making the dog instinctively pull backwards, lessening pressure on the leash. The gentle leader directs your dog's head and neck, and, like a horse in a halter, his body will follow. In addition, the gentle leader:

  • Stops pulling and lunging
  • Prevents jumpingTeaches "sit"
  • Helps manage behavior problems
  • Helps to establish leadership quickly and effectively
  • Won't choke your dog
  • Prevents the dog from walking you

CLASSES AVAILABLE

8 to 12 weeks of age: Classes are taught utilizing the Goodpuppy Social Club Curriculum published by Premier Pet Products, written by Julie Jackson, Dr. Robert K. Anderson, and Dr. Scott Line. The curriculum takes advantage of the optimum period for learning (from birth to about 16 weeks of age) . During the 5 weeks of classes, puppies are socialized with other puppies as well as a variety of people, learn to be handled so that visits to the vet and groomers go smoothly, are introduced to basic obedience commands and are introduced to gentle leader training. All human members of the family are encouraged to attend.

12 to 24 weeks of age: Older puppies have a more structured class including a higher level of obedience, behavior problem solving and socialization. Socialization is done in a controlled environment with puppies of appropriate sizes so that no puppy is bullied or allowed to bully. It is increasingly important as puppies age that they learn how to read body language and how to behave appropriately and this can only be done through socialization.

Older Dogs: Classes scheduled as required.

Private Instruction
Using positive motivation training methods along with Gentle Leader instruction, training can be done at your convenience at your home. Instruction in this manner can start at 8 weeks and is appropriate for any age. Many first time dog owners are more comfortable asking questions in a private setting and find this method of instruction appropriate. Being able to observe problem behaviors in their natural setting allows for a more specific solution to the behaviors you find annoying.
